In Day 1 of the new year Grigor Dimitrov was victorious against No 61 Brian Baker of USA. The Bulgarian needed 82 minutes to beat in two sets 6-3 7-6(8). For this first round win in Brisbane, Australia, Grigor gained 20 ranking points and $7750 of the prize money. Dimitrov dominated in the start of the match by winning 12 of the 13 games and reached to 3-0. When leading 5-2 he missed to score the set-ball but then closed the 1st set 6-3 on his serve. In the second set Dimitrov had 3 chances for early break but Baker saved them. Both players broke in the next games to 3-3. With 6-6 the set was decided by tie-break. Grigor reached a lead of 3-2 after mini-break. Then Baker took the lead reaching 6-4 and 2 set-balls. Dimitrov saved them and then saved two more set-balls. Double fault by the American gave Dimitrov lead by 9-8 and he won the match ball, the set and the match.
In the second round Grigor Dimitrov will face second seed Milos Raonic of Canada. The 21-year-old Dimitrov and 22-year-old Raonic played one ATP level match before and it was Raonic who won in straight sets in Stockholm in 2011. Back in 2009 in the other match between two in Futures tournament in USA Dimitrov reached the success in straight sets.
