12th seeded Grigor Dimitrov defeated world No 22 Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 6-3 7-5 and advanced to the third round of Madrid Masters. The next opponent of Dimitrov is eighth seeded and No 9 ranked Dominic Thiem of Austria. In the two matches played Thiem won in the quarterfinals in Acapulco in 2016 and Dimitrov beat the Austrian in Brisbane at the start of this season.
